A Fire Protection system installed within a HOTEL and/or CASINO complex would regularly specify –as a minimum- an addressable central control panel connected to point type smoke detectors and manual call points. With the control panel “executive action” incorporating the automatic release of associated extinguishing system/s upon receipt of an alarm signal (or combination of alarm signals) from such point type heat/smoke detection devices. In many installations, the Fire Protection system is itself an integral part of a total Building Management System which would also include security system, heating and ventilation control. System reliability, rapid detection response times and minimum maintenance requirements being at the top of any list of priorities for a life protection system!
For bedrooms, offices, restaurants, ballrooms and /or casino areas, sight of a familiar point type smoke detector(normally white in colour and circular in design) has become commonplace. Almost always installed at ceiling height and spaced at the regulation distance from each other in accordance with the Local, National or International standards to which the system has been designed and installed. Their record in terms of reduction in the number of fatal injuries caused by fires due to effective detection of smoke from incipient fire conditions is impressive.

Airflows play a major role in the effectiveness -or otherwise- of point type detection devices. As do local environmental conditions and areas of limited access and surveillance (service ducts, power supply cable galleries, floor/ceiling voids etc) that will be found within ALL multiple residency buildings and areas designed for relaxation and social gatherings. Case histories exist where air pressure within narrow corridors/passages have prevented smoke from reaching ceiling height with the end result of crucial delays in detector operation under certain actual fire situations.
The specification and installation of a line type detection device which may be installed at the EXACT point of risk not only eliminates the risk of delays in detection which may be caused by less than favourable airflows, but minimises annual maintenance costs and the potential for false alarm signals –even within the most dirty, damp, dusty, corrosive environment and where post installation access to the detector/s may be restricted.

LINEAR HEAT DETECTION in their various forms can offer the perfect solution to overheat / fire detection within a number of applications in Hotel and Casino complexes. With the “digital” operating concept (an “ alarm switching” device not dependant upon any specific length being exposed to detect and signal a pre-determined temperature being reached) the most reliable, responsive and cost effective option available.
Within a Hotel / Casino complex, the following are just SOME of the risk areas that are protected by linear heat detection and where environmental conditions, high ceilings or restricted access do not present the same problems experienced with point type detection devices.

• ESCALATORS
• LIFTS/ELEVATOR SHAFTS
• DUCTS -  VENTILATION/EXTRACTION/CABLE
• FALSE FLOORS/CEILINGS
• KITCHENS - COOKER HOODS
• ELECTRICAL CUPBOARDS
• STORAGE ROOMS
• REFUSE AREAS
• LAUNDRY ROOMS.

Consideration should also be given to the possibility for using linear heat detection cable as the wiring for manual call point systems. If call points or manual break glass units ( which are themselves “alarm switching” devices) require wiring to provide an electrical supply and carry an alarm signal to a control panel, then why not use linear heat sensing cable to wire the devices. The linear heat will increase the installed fire systems detection capability through its own ability to locally detect an abnormal temperature rise – regardless of automatic point type detector or manual call point operation!
When used in conjunction with its optional interface unit, the linear heat is also able to indicate the exact location of the alarm signal.
